The Argentina No. 10, one of world’s finest footballer of all times, declared he is retiring from international football, after suffering an international heartbreak in the Copa America final defeat against Chile, sending his team into disarray.

Who is to blame? There are no right answers here certainly but if you equate this situation within your team or company you would find more such examples. High performers and go getters are stars and are self-motivated. They go beyond their call of duties in every situation, they strive, they fight to remain afloat, and many times they are there but not always. When they fail they hate it, while performing right they pay less attention to build themselves up emotionally. They are probably more fragile than average performers.

Most high performers are equally emotional and sensitive people, who own responsibility for their team’s or their own failure. They react in a manner that is not only harmful for their teams but can act as a strong bolt to their own career as well. We often cite examples of successful people who after many failed attempts, don’t give up and finally achieve their goals but such examples are few and hence they are citied as motivational stories. On the other hand there are millions of high performers; best in their game, decide to quit after few failed attempts ending their cruise mid-way.

When these performers are on their peak, the company or leaders assume they would do it on their own, without much external support. They forget that without strong tactically well-developed structure around them you are only fixing them to fail. Developing a system to make the most of your stars is vital, a system that constantly monitors them support them. As a company or a leader if you fail to pay attention to the emotional quotient of your stars, then one day you would get your company where Argentina is today.
